Imagine a society where the government traces every thing that every citizen does. A society with artificial human beings created in lab living amongst the population. One with no music, a thing that most people take for granted today. If we continue to use certain practices today, the future of society will be changed in a negative way for future generations. In the novel 1984, George Orwell was trying to warn the readers about a negative, controlling society. If some aspects of today’s society are overlooked now, in the future we as people will lose some of our rights. Downloading music from the internet, the cloning of humans, and the government invasion of privacy are controversial, yet overlooked topics in today’s society but could have a great negative impact on the future. The first aspect of technology that has potential to cause negative effects on future society is downloading music from the internet. Downloading music is perhaps one of the most controversial topics on the web. Millions of people all over the world are downloading music from programs such as Lime Wire, Morpheus, and KaZaA. The problem with this so-called “file sharing” is that it is actually stealing. Every time someone downloads a song from the internet that is money which is not going to the artist. “As this continues, a chain reaction is formed and the artist makes less money from the product as the public continues to download their songs and burn CD’s illegally, without buying them” (Controversy 1). Recently some record companies have been trying to sue the websites that allow “file sharing” and individuals downloading music. Their lawsuits have not proven to be effective at all. Since Napster was shut down, several other websites specifically for downloading music have appeared and are popular as ever. It would also be impossible for the recording industry to sue every single person who has downloaded music because there are millions upon millions who download. With the new technology to put downloaded music onto a CD on most personal computers assures that it is not necessary for most people to purchase a CD when they can make their own CDs at home.
