Being old in Ireland – A youth perspective As a youth myself I see being old as a horrible experience, this is based on what I know and what I see on the news and on the streets. I see being old as being vulnerable, because there are many attacks on old people on the street and even in there own homes. I don’t think anyone should feel unsafe in their home, no matter what age they are. Something needs to be done about the attacks on the old because they can’t protect themselves and they shouldn’t have to feel vulnerable, no matter where they are. I would hate to grow old alone or for my husband to die because I think the loneliness would kill me, the thought of it makes me feel scared about growing old. Also living alone leaves you more vulnerable to attacks because you cant really protect yourself. You could move in with family but that isn’t always possible because there may not be any room or it just might not be possible, or other solution is to go to a nursing home but some people may not be able to afford it and people like their independence so that might not be an option.
