Pat Sperry GEORGE WASHINGTON (April 30, 1732- Dec.14, 1799) Background/Experience- - Raised and born into a Virginia planter family - Interests as a youth- Military arts, and western Expansion - Surveyed land-1748, surveyed Lord Fairfax's lands in the Shenandoah Valley - in 1749 he was appointed surveyor for Culpeper County - George inherited the Mount Vernon estate after his brother Lawrence died in 1752 - 1759-1774 served in Virginia house of bourgeoisie - January 1759 he married Martha Dandridge Custis - After colonel Braddock was ambushed , he was appointed colonel and commander in chief of the Virginia militia during French and Indian war ( 23 yrs old) - May 1775, was elected commander and chief of the continental army.
