In the passage on pages 68-70, taken from the novel, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, Yukio Mishima characterizes the love of Ryuji and Noburu towards Fusako through indirect characterization, imagery, and repetition. At the time when Noburu takes Ryuji to his house, they sit in the “dim” and “still” room as Noburu is about to fall asleep and Ryuji gazes around the room in astonishment. With this, the internal emotions are both emphasized in order to overall depict the strenuous passion of a person to their line of duty, whether at sea or on land.
