Factors that caused Hitler and Mussolini's rise to power
The Post-War Rise to Power The twentieth century began with war and after war is when the problems began. After the War both Hitler and Mussolini used this time of turmoil to come to power. These leaders used the hate of the people, the political and economic instability of the country, and the fact that the leaders underestimated each of them in order to rise to the position of power. Both of these leaders knew what needed to be done in order to become the dictator of the country. During this post-war time period Hitler and Mussolini both used the hate of the people in order to become great and powerful. The German people hated the Treaty of Versailles because it humiliated them and weakened them. The treaty greatly reduced their military strength and also weakened their economy by asking for reparation payments for the war. The German people’s pride was hurt because they were blamed for the start of the war. Hitler called the people who signed this treaty “November criminals” and he kept reminding them that if he was elected then Germany would refuse to abide by the unfair restrictions placed upon Germany because of the treaty. When the German people entered the depression people were attracted to Hitler because they blamed their problems on the treaty and Hitler had been against the treaty from the start. Hitler had always despised what he called the “inferior races”. Even the swastika was used to intimidate the “inferior races”. When Germany’s economy collapsed in 1930 Hitler was there to blame the Jewish bankers, American capitalists, and Russian communists. Hitler’s popularity grew immensely during this time period as he continued to speak against the Versailles Treaty. The Gestapo was created to purge the country of all “inferior races” and the Gestapo did everything to rid the country of them.
