There is a serious problem in America today and know one seems to be listening. Although other forms of violence within the family have received increasing attention from professional and the media over recent years, including the physical abuse and neglect of children, child sexual abuse and domestic violence.There is still a serious problem in America among our elderly. The problem of elderly abuse within the family and the nursing homes is rarely addressed in our society. The reason I feel that it is rarely addressed is because many may think that it can only happen to younger people. They are wrong it can happen to younger people as well as elderly people. Sexual abuse is a function of power and control. An elderly person who often have little power and may be dependent on other for care, can be victim of sexual abuse. Many may defined elderly sexual abuse as coercing an older person, through force,and other means into sexual contact aganist her or his will.It often begins with covert activites such as inapproprite remars and threats amd mistreatment , which includs oral gential contact and vaginal rape.Sometime the signs of elderly sexual abuse is not known because no systemic study has been done to determine how widespread the problem is.Sexual abuse is normally known by the protective service worker who check for different types of mistreatment of the older person such as physical abuse and neglect. Older people today are more visible, more active and more independeny than ever before. They are living longer and in bette health. But as the population of older American grow, so does the hiddin peoblem of elderly sexual abuse.Every year an estimated of 2.1 million older Americans are victims of sexual abuse. This may not tell the hold stroy. For every case of elderly sexual abuse taht is reported to authorities, thier were an estimate that there may be as many as five cases that have not been reported.Older adult who show signs of dementia may become sexual abusive as part of tyhe disease process, and the object of the sexual abuse may be another older adult, for example an caregiver who is caring for ther elder. Many of the symptoms of sexual abuse may not and can not be cues among the elderly. There is no one explanation for elder sexual abuse . Elder sexual is a comlpex problem that can emerge from several different causes and that often has roots in multiple factors. These factors include family situations, caregiver issues and cultural issues. Many family situation that can contribute to elder sexual abuse and degect include discor in the family crwated by the older person’s persence, a history and pattern of violent interactions within the family and caregiving skills. Intergenerational and marital violence can persist into role age and became factors in elder sexual abuse s simple acontinuation of abuse that has been occurring in the family over many years.Family sexual abuse is another factor that can trigger sexual abuse. When a fail or disabled older moves into a nusing home or a caregiver home there is a big chance that the abuse can happen. In some case, the financial burden of paying for health care for an aging parent or living in overcroweded quarters can lead to stress that can trigger elder sexual abuse. Soical isolation can provide a clue that a family may be in trouble, and it also can be a risk factor for sexual abuse.
