10/7/02 5th per. Hopelessness In the play Hamlet by William Shakespear, Hamlet is cursed with a severe melancholy caused by the shocking news of his fathers death, the hasty marriage of his mother to his evil uncle Claudius, and the death of his true love Ophelia. Hamlets melancholy was somewhat the cause of his fathers, King Hamlet, death. Several incidences impose that his fathers death effected Hamlet . Particularly, when the queen insists “ Good Hamlet cast thy nighted color off”. Here the queen is trying to instruct Hamlet to not look so grief-stricken. She is also trying to tell Hamlet that he should be over his fathers death by now. Not only does the queen dare to make Hamlet realize that he should be over his father by now but the king also attempts this by stating “Give these mourning duties to your father” by which the king is saying get over your fathers death, everyone’s father dies at one time or another.
