Writing Headlines I. Purpose of Headlines A. It names or summarizes important facts of the story. Makes it simple for readers to glance quickly through the paper and select stories to read. B. Communicates mood of the story. C. Signals relative importance of the story. II. Teaser and Teller Headlines A. Teller Headline 1. Gains reader’s attention by clearly and concisely summarizing the story. 2. Straight forward. 3. Uses one or two standard typefaces. 4. Should include these guidelines. a. Be accurate. Specific facts in the headline should be completely supported in the story. b. Be informative. Try to answer as many questions as a news lead does. c. Be fair. Don’t editorialize directly or indirectly unless the headline is for an opinion or editorial. d. Do not put anything in the headline that is not in the story.
