What If

What If? Do you ever wonder where you would be if you made a different decision at one time or another? I do. What if you worked somewhere else, went to a different school, or chose different friends? I know that if I went to a different college, I would not be who I am today. I am glad that I chose to come to Kings College. I believe that by stressing a large core curriculum, Kings has changed me by improving my decision making skills, helping me find a religious direction in life, and making it possible to look rationally into the future. First, I believe that my decision-making skills have matured a great deal. For example, my grandmother and I were always very close. I have a number of childhood memories that involve her. My mother however, never got along well with her mother-in-law. She also persuaded me into thinking that my grandmother was this cranky elderly person and that spending time with her was useless. As a result, I tended to only see my grandmother on holidays and other family gatherings. For the past five years, I may have seen her twelve times even though she lives just five minutes away. This past Christmas, I decided to start seeing her more often while disregarding everything my mother has ever said. We now have lunch together every Monday afternoon. Presently, I feel much better about myself and know she is thrilled about the idea. According to Sigmund Freud, I was acting out of my superego by listening to what my parents have instilled in me. By coming to my own conclusion about my grandmother, I allowed my ego to step in and evaluate what my mother has preached. Also, according to Lawrence Kohlberg, I was acting in the conventional stage of moral development. Specifically, I was in the group loyalty phase.
