Exegesis of Jesus' crucifixion
Preliminary Exegesis of Jesus’ Crucifixion Mark 15: 33-39 Jesus is crucified at nine in the morning. At noon, darkness comes over the entire land and Jesus cries out “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? (15:34)” When some of the bystanders hear him say this, they believe he is crying out to Elijah, so someone fills a sponge with sour wine and puts it on a stick for him to drink. Jesus then screams out in agony and dies. When he dies, the curtain of the temple is torn in half, and a centurion states that this really was the son of God. There is a reason that although Jesus is crucified at nine in the morning, the land doesn’t become dark until three hours later. In those initial three hours, Jesus is enduring the humanly misery of being crucified.
