unknown solid
Abstract: The purpose of this experiment was to learn the identity of an unknown solid through the molecular weight and the pKa. The molecular weight was found using the indicator bromthyml blue and the technique of titrating until a color change was reached. The molecular weight was determined to be 222.0 grams per mole, which gives us a percentage error of 28.19 %. The pKa was determined using the technique of titration using a pH meter. The pKa was determined to be 3.20, which gives us a percentage error of .84 %. Based on these two values for molecular weight and pKa we were able to determine that the unknown solid was actually Sulfanilic Acid. Introduction: This goal of this lab was to determine the identity of an unknown solid. The solid given was known to be acidic. There were two components used to determine the identity of the solid, molecular weight and pKa. Both of these characteristics are things that are true for any sample of a given of a substance, regardless of the amount of sample used, which is why they are good characteristics for determining the identity of the solid.
