Platoon—War Genre
The genre of War began during the time period of World War I; nations around the world used this type of film to boast the heroes of their own troops, and to make less of their enemy. The concept of the military portrayed in the film Platoon is much like a business in that it organizes its departments into teams to more effectively protect the country. The military uses a hierarchical structure of authority to address issues of leadership, decision-making and power within its organization. The military is also faced with handling the highest levels of conflict that effect team members as individuals and as a whole. Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen, is a young volunteer who arrives for his first tour of duty in Vietnam, only to find himself in the middle of a control war between his platoon’s two sergeants, one who will become a father figure, and the other who is as dangerous as the enemy he’s there to fight. Upon his arrival, Chris realizes that his platoon has been slowly splitting into two camps; one led by the rugged, scarred Staff Sergeant Barnes, and the other by the more even-tempered Sergeant Elias.
