Ethics Under Fire What virtues do we expect from the people that govern our country and make the most important decisions on our behalf? Maybe we don’t expect them to have an identical morality to each of us, but I do believe we demand they uphold a certain level of ethics common to our way of life. Isn’t this why we have a Constitution? Aren’t all Americans equal in the eyes of the government and the law, regardless of race, gender and sexual orientation? Howard Coble of Greensboro and Sue Myrick of Charlotte, both Republican House members from North Carolina, don’t seem to share this belief that we are all equal. This I say after reading the generalized statements they have made about certain minority ethnic groups. Faler writes about a radio talk show where Coble said he believes President Roosevelt was right to send Japanese Americans to internment camps during World War II. He then went on to support his shallow comment by stating that this decision helped to ensure national security because “Some Japanese Americans probably were intent on doing harm to us.” According to Coble’s affirmations, I come to the assumption that he believes that people base their actions on their race or culture, and not on their individual beliefs, morals or ethics.
